Seagrass is an important coastal and estuarine ecosystem. It serves as a primary producer, fish foraging and nursery habitats, stabilize marine sediments, prevent coastal erosion and also serves as an environmental health indicator. Therefore, consistent monitoring activity provides information on the surrounding environmental conditions in response to natural or human-induced changes.

Our monitoring sites are located at the Merambong in the Pulai River Estuary, which boast the single, largest and contiguous seagrass meadow in the country measuring 1.8 km in length. Monitoring activity is carried during extreme low tides and is usually completed within a couple of hours. SOS adopts SeagrassWatch methods in monitoring changes on seagrass conditions.Invertebrate census is also carried out in combination with seagrass monitoring.
